Additional Programs

BDS’s Adventure High’s program will also provide experiential learning opportunities for university students who are either studying:
1. Experiential education, or
2. Cultural tourism
As extending our education to post-secondary students support BDS’s mission to ensure that our students bring about environmental and cultural change:

Sustainable Tourism Training

Our program will explain clearly to our school students and participating university students the importance of learning Balinese traditional skills. University students will then work on assignments (overseen by university professors) that explain the importance of building and supporting experiential education and cultural tourism opportunities in Bali as a means of ensuring the preservation of and respect for Balinese culture and Balinese people.

While education about climate change is urgently needed around the world, and there is an emerging understanding that tourism training needs to take into account environmental and cultural sustainability, there are few practitioners who are qualified and trained to teach students about climate change or build cultural and environmentally sustainable tourism programs that produce real outcomes in real time. We will enable students enrolled at local universities in tourism degrees to complete a semester on sustainability tourism at our school. University students will receive credit towards their degrees from Universitas Pendidikan Ganesha (Undiksha) and other universities with cultural tourism programs who wish to participate in this program.

University students can watch how our school teaches core subjects through working with local artisans to participate in traditional Balinese skills and activities (e.g. blacksmithing, farming, carving, building) in environmentally sustainable and culturally respectful ways. Through observing and reflecting on our programs, and comparing our programs to more western-focused tourism offerings, students can assess the impact of cultural tourism. Our school teachers will work with the university students to create tourism programs that strengthen (rather than eliminate) Balinese traditions, practice, and expertise that can then be used in the future to teach our school programs.

We will accept individuals wishing to complete their practicums, or entire classes, depending on the preference of the university/ professors. Fees for local university students will be in line with traditional practices. International students will pay 10,000,000 IDR per week for a minimum of 2 weeks, or 30,000,000 IDR for 1 month of practicum/ training.

Working with university students will be a critical component of our school, as teaching future teachers to teach experientially about climate action and protecting Bali’s cultural heritage is fundamental to our yayasan’s and our school’s mission.

Student teacher training (Experiential and land-based teaching)

The Western education system was based on the industrial revolution model, designed to produce factory workers, with children sitting in a classroom all day learning theory and random facts. Education around the world is undergoing a revolution, with more and more governments recognising the need to change the way children learn to prepare them for an uncertain future. Several countries have overhauled their curriculum (e.g. British Columbia 2016, Indonesia IKM 2024, Norway 2019) to allow the flexibility to teach children using hands-on and land-based activities which allow children to learn useful life skills and problem solving and critical thinking skills to empower and equip them for the future. However, teachers are not yet prepared to teach using these new experiential techniques. Our school will work with teaching programs around the world to offer a one month hands-on teacher training program focussed on how to design and run experiential, land-based programs that deliver academic outcomes. We will have two teachers with many years of expertise in experiential learning to guide the student teachers. This program will generate income for the school.

Climate/ Culture Hero Camps

We will also run week-long educational programs that a) introduce potential students to our school; b) enable our teachers to gain experience applying IKM content in practical situations, and c) pursue the objectives of our school’s mission to education students about protecting and supporting Bali’s natural and cultural heritage, for example:
  • Nature camps, where students build camps in nature, find food and water, and learn how to survive while respecting and protecting Bali’s natural environment (at our Bukit campus) (Olahraga, Science, Biology)
  • Bali engineering camp, where students work with tukang bangunan to build structures using Balinese techniques and materials (at our Bukit campus) (Math, Science)
  • Bali fashion design camp, where students work with Penjahit Bali to design and sew traditional clothes for ceremonies (at our Bukit campus) (Culture, Religion, Math)
  • Gymnastics and paskibraka camp, where students learn fun routines through discipline and practice (at our Bukit campus) (Olahraga)
  • Sustainable adventure camp, where students go around Bali living lightly and finding ways to implement environmental action plans to become more sustainable and protect the environment (off-campus) (Biology, Olahraga, Science)

The costs of camps will be 4,000,000 IDR per week for international students (including accommodation on campus). For local students the fee will be 150,000 IDR. Camps will run with a minimum of 10 students.

All food provided at camps will be vegan and plastic-free.

Homestays and Community Engagement

It is fundamentally important to our school’s mission that we ensure the retention of Balinese land under Balinese ownership and stewardship for Bali’s future. Therefore, all international students who want to attend our school or our Climate/ Culture Hero Camps will be required to stay in local homestays. Our school will work with desas to find housing for families who want to send their students to school. This way, parents also learn about local culture and traditions, and learn how to respect and support Bali’s religion and culture. Staying in local homestays will support the learning that their children will receive at our school.
